We’ve been sold the story that wellbeing is something you buy. Yoga memberships, green juices, retreats in Bali.
But here’s the truth: real wellbeing is an inside job — and it’s mostly free.
I know this not just as a coach and writer, but as a woman who once rode the very edges of burnout.
In the middle of raising a child, working full-tilt in advocacy and education, and ticking every ‘good person’ box, I found myself sitting on the front steps of my home unable to breathe.
No spa voucher or silent retreat was going to save me. What I needed was a re-set from the inside out.
And what I discovered was this:
- Our nervous systems don’t need luxury, they need safety.
- Our breath is free and available to us 24/7.
- Our bodies are wise, intelligent and adaptable.
- Our attention is one of the greatest gifts we can offer ourselves.
This is what I call Wellbeing on a Budget —it’s at the heart of my coaching services and is the core of the book I wrote when I applied my learnings and practices to my own life for long enough to deeply understand their power.
Wellbeing on a Budget is not about going without. It’s about coming back to what’s already within.
Here’s what wellbeing can look like (without spending a cent):
- A slow, steady breath or three before your next meeting.
- Lying flat on the floor noticing the parts of your body that are touching the floor, between Zoom calls.
- Drinking your cuppa holding your mug with both hands to feel the warmth and no scrolling.
- Five minutes of feeling the sun on your skin (the delight of this feeling is called ‘apricity’).
- Listening to your body and acknowledging what it needs in the moment instead of pushing past it.
No subscription. No upgrade. Just compassionate presence.
Reflection
What if you already have what you need to re-set, starting today?
Not more effort. Just more noticing. Not more hustle. Just more exhale.
A Final Whisper:
Wellbeing isn’t a reward you earn by being productive. It’s your birthright. And it lives in the tiniest moments — the ones you’re allowed to claim, right now.
